First Headstand!
"1 hour of yoga...did my first headstand in the middle of the room (look ma! no wall!) for a few seconds with my teachers help...I was very wobbly, but hope to continue to work on that. Then 1 hour of muy thai...we took body shots...damn my ribs are a little sore...I sure learned quick how to block punches!!" ~ Gina C., Marvelous May Challenge

In February I got really excited because I had made it to 1000 miles on my bike speedometer. I had been using that thing since August, so it took my about 6 months to get to that point (which means my bike century miles were included in that, and helped me gain some of those miles). I thought it was a huge accomplishment. But now, it's 3 months later and I am only 300 miles away from 2000 miles! I figured if I bike 15 miles a day, 5 days a week, I can get to 2000 miles by next month. And that's totally doable. And, now that it's vacation and I have more time to bike, and take longer trips, it might even be less than a month. I'm excited.

I think my workouts today made up for the last couple days of not working out. I really missed not being able to work out. I started out biking to Crunch Union Sq for yoga. As soon as that finished I had to run the few blocks to Crunch Lafayette for a session with Anthony. When I told Anthony that I wouldn't be able to meet at the regular time on Monday, we tried to find a time that would work. He suggested Wednesday and I said I take yoga with Jess on Wednesdays. So he had the wonderful idea of me coming right after yoga, because he said yoga is easy. He doesn't know Jess. I was shaking the whole time. The gym got this new TRX station, so that's where we spent most of the time. When the session was finished I had to bike uptown for an interview, then finally bike home. That's where my 253 minutes come from.

FINALLY back at hot yoga. Studio Breathe (my usual) was closed for 2 months!! due to new location/renovation delays. It was soooo good to take a class with Kimiko again. They are still under construction so no ventilation system except for open windows so it was extra super sweaty. Afterwards I felt like 2 months of toxins had come out of my body. Surprisingly nothing was sore when I woke up this morning.
pushups were done in the stairwell at work. also biked to and from yoga (about 10 min. each way).

On Timing and Crowds
"First post-Bikina workout of the week. Interesting to see what is sore this time around- hamstrings and triceps and abs- oh my! I cannot figure out what time I can go to the gym and not be bothered by other people. Who are all of these people working out at 9:30am? Shouldn't you people be at work? Wednesdays are MY late day at work- it shouldn't be yours! Get off my machine!"

Sweat or Rain?
"I completed a circuit workout today (that I designed myself - yay!) that incorporated cardio and strength moves (esp. moves that worked the glutes, shoulders, chest, and core). Talk about a sweat! I thought it was raining in my house!"

Monday is The Finish Line!
Day. Twenty. One. Hooray! Just one quiet Monday left in our challenge, i.e. TODAY, and it's all yours for a great practice and deep meditation. Make it count. Next stop, the big challenge wrap up, and virtual celebration....
NEWBIE: Yoga for Restful Sleep with Jason Crandell
Wind down with this sequence of shoulder and hip openers and forward folds to soothe your nervous system and mind.

NOT A NEWBIE: Side Bends with Jason Crandell
This sidebending practice will help your entire practice and your activities off the mat.

CHALLENGE TIP:
If you ever need an extra boost of inspiration to get on your mat, consider this: Just 20 minutes of yoga a day can actually change your genes. Scientists have found that stress-related genes change behavior in the face of the relaxation response, which is invoked during yoga and other meditative techniques.

watered the garden and then went for a run. it was hot out there. totally slowed me down. even though I complained about running in the cold the past few months, I think I actually prefer 50°F and rain over hot and sunny. I feel old and fat today.

National bike to work day. It meant there was free breakfast when I got off the bridge. Also that there were so many more bikers than usual.

Almost There!
Yogis! Every month since January we have run a 21-day challenge. The challenge remains the same each month, much like a set series of yoga poses, but our performance varies. One month may be a disaster, while the next a triumph. The monthly challenge is a way to watch yourself over time, to see how life pushes you onto, or off of, the mat. It's nice to hit the 21 day goal, yes, but perhaps more important simply to keep track of yourself, to observe your ups and downs. We're happy to say that this month has been solid across the board: Together we've logged 8,971 minutes of mediation, and over 1,100 yoga practices. Nice work!
Amazingly, there are now just three days left in the May challenge. Wherever you are, now is the time breathe deep and make 'em count! To nudge you along, Yoga Journal is once again offering a superfine YJ water bottle, calendar, and a DVD to the challenger who goes the furthest in this month's challenge. Nothing wrong with external rewards to complement the internal!
SO, the challenge ends Monday and we'll give you through Tuesday to file any catch-up posts. On Wednesday, we'll make the big announcement in a virtual awards ceremony, and offer congratulations all around. And then it's on to JUNE!
Best,

I love morning workouts, even though waking up never gets easier. The picture is of Alex Schatzberg, who teaches my Tues-Thurs morning Ashtanga classes. Though he's young, Alex is very good, and he's developed a loyal following. I'm totally a regular now, and it's true what they say: At a certain point you're getting out of bed not just for yourself, but also because you know your teacher will miss you if you don't show up...

My bike ride. I apologize to anyone I may have bothered by biking on the wrong side of the bridge, but I wasn't have a good day and I really needed to take the pretty side of the bridge home and see sunset to make me feel better.
